I don't believe this is any longer true. <br /><br />In the past, I feel that church and Bible authority was common place and therefore a go to trump card for supporting opinions and beliefs whether they were actually biblically based or not. Pulling a scripture out of context and making a half way convincing argument for slavery or the suppression of women's rights was enough for a lot of people because most of the public had a view of scripture as being authoritative.<br /><br />Today, I feel that a high view of scripture as being authoritative is rare. People seem to view the Bible as an outdated antiquity that is an embarrassing remembrance of how weak and naive we used to be. Homosexuality and the woman's right to choose is touted as being morally superior to what the Bible teaches. <br /><br />All of this to say that, personally, I can't think of any social issues that scripture is wrongly supporting or unjustly arguing against.
